It was not overly late, yet the bar was already quickly filling up with the evening crowd. Neon flickered from beer signs hung on the walls, and music filled the space – just loud enough to allow people to talk without being overheard, but not so loud as to completely prevent conversation.
The woman behind the bar grinned at her customers seated at the bar, cigarette clamped in her mouth as she grabbed a mug from behind her. She filled it up from one of the taps and slid it across to one of the men. Removing the cigarette she ground it out in an overfull ashtray. “Yeah, you’d think that, right?” She burst out in answer to something he’d said. “But, I mean, hey, what the hell do I know? I just pour the damn drinks, right?!”
She glanced past him to where two of her regulars looked like they were getting worked up. “Hey!” She shouted across the bar. “Hey! I’ve already told you! Knock it the hell off and behave or I’ll have him kick ya out!” She gestured towards a tall man standing near the door, not intentionally drawing attention to himself but still intimidating. “That’s if I don’t get to ya first!”
Another night, more of the same old crap. Yet the past few years it had grown on her. This was a shithole…but it was her shithole and she’d come to like it that way.
