BACKSTORY
Past: Ryuzaki was born out of wedlock, to two fierce beings, Aiko and Genji, way before either of them were ready to be parents, they were only sixteen. It began at a sword-fighting competition. Of course, the legendary Shimada brothers had both enrolled in their respective categories. Hanzo was already past eighteen and now competed in the men's section. Aiko, had disguised herself as a young boy and competed in Genji's under-18 category... and won, leaving Genji flabbergasted, even more so when he discovered her true gender. Luckily, and perhaps unlike his brother Genji was a true sportsman and was a gentleman about the loss, supporting her cause of letting more girls train at the dojo, of course advocating such causes was met with much criticism. Nonetheless, she had piqued his interest, in more ways than just the usual girls he was nice too. He preferred her as a sparring partner, much more than he did his brother, perhaps because with Aiko, one thing often led to another...
At some point, Ryuzaki was concieved and things changed. When Aiko's mother found out about the pregnancy, the girl was practically held prisoner in her own house. Once Ryuu was born and old enough to not need his mother as much, Aiko begged her mother to let her train in disguise again, especially since now, she was a legal adult. Once the training began again, the love-birds Genji and Aiko, found their way to each other once more. Things almost went back to normal, especially because Aiko decided to keep the news about Ryuu to herself for the safety of her kid and to not burden Genji. But the Shimada clan had eyes on their ninja boy, soon they became aware of these meetings, but refrained from doing anything too drastic immediately. Oblivious, Genji and Aiko continued meeting secretly till she (unluckily) conceived another child, a girl this time... Ryuu's baby sister.
Once the Shimadas got whiff of this child, the alleged playboy was kept far away from the scandal. Upon the birth of of the girl, Shimada officials began investigating, while they were unnerved by the sister, the existence of the Ryuu, threatened the stability of their clan and brotherhood. So they in turn, threatened Aiko, perhaps they were all insecure that one day Ryuu would claim his place in the Shimada ranks. They discreetly checked in on the boy's progress often. He wasn't supposed to train, but his mother began teaching him early, much to the discontent of these lower ranking Shimadas.
When he was Ryuu was about ten and his sister about 8/9, Aiko had had enough of the oppression, tired of her life she decided to challenge these officials, she knew she'd need Genji's help, so she sent a silent plea for help by attaching the young ninja's last name to her son, making the implication plain. Unfortunately, the news didn't reach the right ears in time. Genji never heard of his children's existence, instead that night, he was challenged by his brother and the infamous duel followed, which left Genji allegedly dead. On the other hand, Aiko faced low ranking Shimada officials, Ryuu witnessed the battle that ensued, Aiko fought valiantly but they men didn't play fair, she was outnumbered and eventually fell. They spared Ryuu and the rest of the family under the condition that they'd relocate and settle in another village. A particularly nasty official left the young boy with a cross shaped scar on his left cheek, as a reminder of is illegitimacy. Realizing they didn't really have a choice, the remaining family complied.
They relocated to a village far enough so that Ryuu could call himself whatever he wanted. Believing his mother wanted him to identify himself as Genji's son, he kept the name Shimada, despite his grandmother's reservations. While even in this new village the name echoed fear, at least the Shimadas didn't have any real jurisdiction. He continued training at a local dojo, matching the master as he entered his teens, which was a surprisingly easy feat for the boy. He would try to passively dissuade his sister from training, simply because he was scared she'd attract the kind of attention his mother did, and he was sure he wasn't prepared to lose her the same way.
The boy often wondered if the power of the dragon was vested in him. Especially because he had a knack for mastering things much quicker than others. Sometimes he felt a surge of uncontrollable energy inside him, but it was not something he had any mastery over. It was a discovery he could probably not make alone. Eight years later, at the age of fourteen, Ryuu lost his maternal grandparents, in quick succession. Left with no one to call his own, he decided to venture back to Hanamura with his thirteen year old sister. Rumor had it, that Genji had been slayed by Hanzo a few years ago and the Shimada's were rising to a dangerous peak, they had no where left to go but down. Ryuu kept a low profile, working at a Ramen bar near the Shimada dynasty, he watched as Hanzo withered away, eventually betraying the clan he was meant to lead...

Present: Contrary to popular belief, not all the elders of the once lethal clan were dead. After the strikes on the clan from both the brothers, the ones left were caught up with trying to defeat each other and gain control, only to destroy the clan further. Only the wisest few survived, with bitter disregard for each other, but with the sense to call a truce. They were mostly scattered, but they returned every fortnight to discuss the future of the clan, which mostly ended with arguments and nothing else. It was one of these meetings that a clever omnic struck, a machine that had made a simple alliance with the simple Ryuu.
After an intervention from the mysterious Yuratta, Ryuu was handed over control of the remnants of the Shimada clan. The elders were united, by some distortion to their psyche. Now, they used their wisdom and skills solely for the advancement of their new leader. Naive Ryuzaki, was put through a rigorous training, till finally he discovered the power of the dragon that he was gifted with. Ryuukage, they called it. His dragon powers allowed him to manipulate some sort of dark energy and create, for some time, shadows that were capable of doing everything that he could.
For the most part, the kid used his powers defensively, but on one occasion, he was forced to kill an assassin attempting to bludgeon one of the elder's who was caught off guard. It was then, that they discovered, upon killing a person using the force of the Ryuukage, Ryuzaki learned and mastered the skills of the victim. The hungry elders soon wanted to round up well-known assassins and have Ryuu slay them to learn their techniques, but the boy firmly refused and said he'd go about his training the usual way. The clan members keep trying to convince him otherwise...
