Sarah sat with her feet tucked up under her on the porch swing, this had quickly become her new favorite place here at the ranch, of the admittedly limited places here she'd seen. She'd been cautioned not to wander too far alone, she was small and might get hurt, not used to life here. But even for the worry about what might happen to her here...this place was still better. It was quiet...but a nice kind of quiet, not a scary quiet like it used to be, a quiet like people waiting for something bad to happen. people going around looking afraid, enough that it made her afraid too. But even the terrible, scary quiet was better than the fighting, the explosions, everything broken beyond repair afterwards.
But there had been none of that here yet...she didn't trust that to last forever...but it was nice, she cautiously admitted, while it lasted. She didn't understand everything here, she didn't speak like them that well, and none of them spoke like her...but she was slowly learning and wanted to get better, wanted to understand. She wanted to make Mister Sam proud of her, he'd promised he would not leave her where she had been, and it had taken so many days, but he had done it, he'd taken her and brought her here instead...she missed her friends, she missed her family, she wished they could be here too...but...she did not even know if they were still alive. Everything had been terrible, it was hard to know.
She tried not to think about that, humming a little to herself as she watched around her, trying to think about better things. Nicer things. Sam had said there were other children here for her to meet, but she hadn't yet. Part of her wanted to go looking for them, but hadn't quite dug up the courage to go wandering around by herself yet to look at them.
