Real Name: Raun Haytham Hunter
Nickname: Raun
Age: 25 Years
Nationality: British
Occupation: Engineer/Bartender
Base of Operations: Milan
Affiliation: Neutral Good
Voice: Johnny Yong Bosch
Personality: Raun can be summed up in a single word: logical. Every single decision in his life, irrespective of how small or big, is made considering the consequences. This, in no way, means that he doesn’t have or understand emotions. He understands the emotions of others fine and acknowledges his own. However, despite the emotions, he believes the final decision should be for the greater good. Such practical philosophy has helped him keep calm and avoid impulsive actions even during the most stressful situations.
But the man isn’t without his flaws. Behaviourally, he is what one would call a ‘prick’. He is sarcastic, cocky, and insensitive; doesn’t like to be told what to do; and obnoxiously intolerant towards the technologically ignorant. He has zero interest in chit-chat and all his curiosity is generally bound to science. However, his recent stint as a bartender had done wonders to his social skills; he has finally begun to understand the power of contacts and information.
Back Story: Howard and Annie Hunter were on their first vacation in over three years, celebrating the conception of their first child. The vacation, originally planned to last over a week, didn’t last a day. The minute they landed on Sicily, they were requested to return to London and report to the Naval Base for an urgent mission. Once back home, they realized what the urgency was all about. Omnic crisis. The Hunters were among the first technological experts who contributed greatly to the rise of Omniums across the world and were called upon to investigate the dire situation. They had no idea what was causing the Omnics to go to war against their creators.
Annie wanted to help but also wanted to have her baby. Obviously, the Omnics were not going to wait eight more months and let her give birth before shooting another soul. And refusing to join the fight would only mean her child is born in a war-torn world, which she didn’t want. So, she did what was logical. She transferred the foetus to an artificial womb and went on with the mission. Overwatch was formed, and the long and bloody war ended eventually. However, neither Annie nor Howard survived. Raun Hunter was born an orphan into what is called the ‘Overwatch Generation.’
The golden age began and Overwatch was now more than just a task force. Several humanitarian organizations agglomerated under its name into new divisions. One such division adopted all the children orphaned during the crisis. They housed, fed, and schooled these children at huge campuses in all the major cities around the world. Raun Hunter grew up in the London campus.
Like his parents, the young boy was clearly inclined towards science and engineering, and this was spotted by his educators very early in his childhood. By the time he was six-years old, he had a personalized schedule from top brass that would enable him to graduate with a doctorate when he was twenty. Everything was going well. Raun enjoyed learning along with the special attention he received. He had only one friend, named Jeffrey Forbes, and spent all his spare time throwing darts with him while discussing technology. Who needed a social life when he could spend that time reverse engineering and upgrading the state-of-the-art tech?
He was almost twenty; the day of his dreams wasn’t far away. Finally, he was going to graduate and join Overwatch as one of the youngest prodigal engineer. But… That never happened. In a violent turn of events, Overwatch was shut down along with all of its divisions. The agents scattered. And the students thrust into the chaotic world with nowhere to go.
Every day, things got worse. Mobs and gangs ruled the streets and bullied the weak. Smuggling became rampant, causing shortage of supply and inflation in prices. Omnic-Human skirmishes were on the rise. Raun wasn’t big on Omnic-Human equality. He had heard the stories of the crisis and his parents died fighting them. According to him, the development of AI was a huge mistake and humans had no one but themselves to blame for the crisis. So, all the hatred and violence against the peaceful Omnics baffled his logical brain.
Work was hard to find in all this chaos. Raun had to settle bartending at a small tavern near the local markets. While it sure wasn’t his dream job, he didn’t hate it given the circumstances. The best part of his job? He enjoyed conning the drunk men into believing they were better than him at darts, encouraging them to place bets, and then defeating them for the prize money. The bar owner didn’t mind, as long as the spoils were shared. Raun did it more for the gags than the money anyway.
Days crept into weeks and then months. Raun was about to accept and settle into his monotonous bartending life when he heard from his only friend, Jeffrey Forbes, who offered him an engineering job in Milan. There weren’t much details in the mail and he was promised a better job description than ‘engineering’ once he reached the base of operations. But the fact that it came from Jeffrey was enough for Raun to pack his bags to catch the next flight to Milan. If not his only friend, whom else was he going to trust?
