Personality: Jak is an odd sort of guy. He’s usually very laid back, though if a topic he’s interested in or likes is brought up, he instantly shoots up, and exaggerates things, throwing in a lot of references and rather out-there statements. He often goes with the flow of things, though some might say he gets a little too into things, often being a few minutes late to whenever a meeting or the like is scheduled. He’s fairly perceptive, though he usually refrains from pointing anything out in case he can use them later. He also has a sharp tongue, which is often put to good use, though he means nothing by it, and often apologizes almost directly after. He has a habit of unnecessarily complicating things through his own thought process. He’s rather intelligent though sometimes he does stupid things that are plainly stupid simply because the idea “sounds like fun”, and lives for the thrill. He’s easily more reckless than the average person. Usually, though when angered, his tone becomes much sharper and sarcastic. He’s able to make a quick jump to relaxed to volatile, though he never seems to be nervous or entirely shocked about anything.
At least, that's what it looks like.
History: Jackson was the child of two particularly special people, and initially born in Cork, Ireland. His father, Daniel Davis, had disappeared during a mission around 10 years into his service, labelling him MIA to this day. In reality, he left Overwatch after constantly disagreeing with its ideals and views. The original Madman was somewhat of a mad scientist; and worked on the Soldier Enhancement Program, as one of the main researchers on the project. After escaping during a mission with valuable intel on the Australian outback, as well as a female Junker known as "Sharkblade", or Kaede Smith. He sold the intel to Talon in order to gain the funds and support needed, and began experimenting with his own recently newborn child, watching how he would react in various situations, as well as attempting to create a living weapon out of his offspring, which the design of which he had begun working on since his Overwatch days. Kaede was the mother of this child, and from Jack's point of view, the greatest light of his life. The choice of taking a Junker as the mother of his child was debatable, but Daniel had found Kaede to be surprisingly less irradiated than other Junkers, as well as her physical prowess, made her a suitable candidate for the soldier Daniel wished to create.
Kaede was, in contrast to Daniel's dismissive and limited presence, constantly there for her son and fiercely protective of her son, to a point where one would say she was spoiling him. Life as a Junker had led her to view life as precious, her own being torn apart by the explosion when she had only been a teenager herself. She herself only viewed Daniel as a way of escaping Australia, but once a child was born, she was determined to give him a far better life instead of allowing it any opportunity to be destroyed like hers had. She would consistently spend as much time as possible with him, engaging him in various activities that she thought might interest him, even if there was barely any present. It was at this time when he was introduced to computers and technology, his young mind blown at how complicated systems were. His father, viewing this as useful, began to teach him complicated processes such as coding and hacking, building him up for later in life so he could perform all possible needed roles in any form of mission.
It was also from a young age that Jackson’s social skills remained incredibly weak, preferring to spend time with his video games and computers than interact with other children. He was bullied, but his mother quickly put a stop to that, and soon Jackson was constantly getting into fistfights and yelling matches, labeling himself as a problem child: though he was consistently bad at interacting with other people, he was incredibly talented with technology to the point of being labelled a prodigy. One of the main reasons for his weak social skills were that his weekends were simply blurs to him: his father would consistently run tests on him and perform minor experiments in order to consistently improve his physical ability--though unfortunately, Jackson had managed to remain a few pounds overweight despite all of Daniel's attempts. Kaede remained unaware of this, assuming it was just "father-son time", and Jackson never had anything bad to say about it, simply saying "I don't remember.", except for the few occasions where they actually did have father-son time, though only to throw Kaede off the scent.
Whilst Jackson had just completed high school, during a car ride, he suffered a car crash in the woods while going camping alone. The reality of the situation was that it was planned by Talon themselves, so that Daniel could further enhance his son by equipping him with a cybernetic arm and eye that would allow grant him better abilities: the eye served as a holographic projector, and was also designed to connect to the internet and function as a miniature computer, allowing it to function as a scanner, and functioning camera where he could record what he saw with his left eye or take snapshot functions, as well as view recordings and live feeds himself that he would be able to directly upload to a database as long as internet connection was available. The arm was simply for strength, as a cybernetic arm was stronger than an organic one, as well as being unable to feel pain, which were both pluses from Daniel and Talon’s point of view. However, Jak himself modified his arm, equipping it with an additional computer which he would later use to control his own creations, as detailed below.
Due to the accident, Jackson took a gap year before moving onto university, where he began to design his own drones. Initially, they had no combat abilities, and were simply a form of robotic pets. But when Jackson entered university, taking technology related courses, he began to fit them with military abilities, as a form of testing: one was designed to eject an elastic web like structure that would bounce its user back to safety if they ever fell from a large height, and another was designed to create a shield around the user to shield them from any one attack, while slowly using nanomachines to restore and repair any damage whilst active, and the third was designed to fold out into a buzzsaw, and attack all enemies on site until damaged, where it could then return to its former small size and user and repair damages. The drones were operated through the usage of the computer installed in his arm, while he was able to view the world through their eyes and scan their statuses with his cybernetic eyes. The three were submitted as his final project, scoring him top marks.
Additionally, following his admission into university, Jackson made a strict attempt to act differently than he had when he was younger: he made more of an attempt to get along with others, almost playing the role of a fool or class clown in order to avoid a feeling of loneliness that had followed him for a good portion of his life. Even though it simply felt fake to him, he found it worked to some degree, and began to expand upon it, modifying himself from both his sense of fashion (though, in high school he had already settled into a punk philosophy and dressed as such, but he began to dress more scruffily, such as purposefully wearing unironed shirts or mismatched socks.) to his manner of speech so as to stand out more and be the center of attention, which he personally found better than constantly getting into fights or working on his lonesome.
Following his maturation, by the time he had entered his final year of university, Daniel began the next stage of the plan: Threatening Kaede's life, he forced Jackson into training whilst being pumped full of nanomachines and the like as a form of an advanced version of the soldier enhancement program. Jackson had little ability to resist due to his paranoia, as he believed that not only would the authorities deny anything he said and pass it off as deranged raving, but he was also told that Talon would definitely hunt him down. As such, Jackson began his “combat training”, where he would perform various tasks ranging from testing his physical abilities and mental abilities, such as endurance running, aiming and shooting, and even designing and building a gun, which was later named the "LuvGun". A final modification to his arm was made, allowing it to store energy that could be converted into damaging bullets and lasers, which the LuvGun made use of. During all this, Kaede was kept in the dark, but she was no idiot; she knew something was going on behind the scenes, and she was determined to protect her son, so she began her own form of investigation in an attempt to gather clues about the situation.
Following Jackson’s graduation, Daniel and Talon were prepared to move on with the final stage of the plan: to finally brainwash him entirely and make him a slave to their grand scheme. However, Daniel himself had been cocky from birth, and the supposed success of everything so far had led him to grow more and more lax, assuming everything would continue to progress smoothly. However, there was a single error he hadn't accounted for:
Kaede.
Jackson’s mother had finally gotten a grasp of what was going on, and had spent days preparing herself for this: life as a junker had led her to grow some talent in the creation of explosives and general destruction, and she was prepared to put a stop to this. For days now, she had been waiting for the perfect chance to end this, but the moment she heard her child yell, she burst straight in.
The result of this was that she killed Daniel, and began to destroy the laboratory and its equipment, while her son began to explain to her exactly what was going on. However, this was cut short, as Kaede set up a bomb and planned to escape back to Australia with her son, and later develop a better plan and try and build him a normal life from the remains of what was left of this one, when Talon agents entered, attempting to claim Jackson and finish what Daniel had started. As such, Kaede was killed by Talon Agents, while Jackson made his escape--his mother had packed all his things ready for him, as well as purchased plane tickets, allowing him to make an almost clean break.
Now wanted by Talon, Jackson entered the life of a criminal, doing odd hacking and mercenary jobs here and there to put food on the table, drifting from place to place. He had decided that he wouldn’t revert to how he had been before, and instead would at least try and have some degree of fun with his new life, causing him to dedicate it to honoring his mother’s memory, and pissing on his father’s. Hee got even more extreme with the punk fashion and ideals, choosing to go by Jak instead of Jackson, selecting Madman as his online moniker and mercenary name, (His father’s former Callsign in Overwatch. He saw it as another way of pissing the old git off from the grave.) and he remained a firm individual, ready to continue playing the role he had written for himself. He was determined that he wouldn’t die and simply be forgotten, and that he instead would eventually be able to rest easy, and do something great that would leave his name in the books.
That was the promise he made.
