Personality:
Pacifist, Intelligent, Accomplished
Myopic, Imprudent, Dependent
Angela's blessings are curses in disguise. Presented with beauty and brains, one would assume she had it easy. But she is an under-satisfied overachiever. Distancing herself from people easily because she believes she has to constantly be at work for the betterment of the society. Measuring success for her is easy, she just counts the number of lives she has saved, but its not as black and white as that.
Angela is a practical pacifist, but fails to realise how those two, maybe at odds with each other in several circumstances. Zeigler is often fighting the wrong battles, in order to maintain her anti-war attitude. An example of this is her dismay at Torbjorn building the biotic rifle for Ana, despite her being fully aware of the duties of Overwatch. She knew that the organisation has to wage war to keep the peace and the fact that she could aid by healing the wounded warriors and innocent victims is what drew her to Overwatch. It was a practical decision which she quickly began to doubt.
The woman is quick-fixer and is proud of it, but Mercy's experiments are not careful and deliberate, she does what it takes to save a life. Unfortunately, her smarts outsmart her sensibilities and she often misses the possible fallout of her work.
History:
Angela didn't have a full grasp on the concept of family, before the war snatched her parents away from her. Rather than harbouring vengeance in her heart for the opponents, she held onto the hatred for war itself. Though she was quickly picked up by a foster family, she missed out on the natural perks of friendships and love that her personality and beauty would have attracted easily. Instead she delved into books, eager to prove to the family that had adopted her, that she was worth the trouble.
Angela showed a keen interest in the field of medicine and engineering with the use of nanotechnology. But when the time came for her to choose, she chose being a medic over being an engineer, since it was a more direct way to save lives. However she never gave up on her interest and used her profound yet unpolished knowledge in engineering and always found time to tweak things to keep her skills sharpened.
Soon she was the head of surgery in a prominent swiss hospital. This gave her free reign over her department. It was here that she performed her first unauthorised experiment on a burn victim. She found a way to make his cells regenerate using a certain graft as a bandage and within days he was as good as new. No one talked of the few failed experiments, since usually those people were as good as dead in any case, but a couple of more successful experiments and she was on Overwatch's radar.
After deliberation, she agreed to join the organisation, especially after she was given the opportunity to put her engineering skills to work and build her own valkyrie suit and the caduceus staff and (after being told it was necessary) blaster. More importantly though, she joined because she saw it as an access point to more people who needed help. For the most part that is how it worked, but Mercy also earned herself a new family and learned to tolerate war for the greater good (to a degree).
Then things started to take a turn for the darker. The tension brewing between the blackwatch leader and the overwatch starboy was getting palpable. Mercy took more time off from work to help victims instead of aid in battle, simply because her workplace was getting suffocating. Its on one of these runs that she found Genji. He needed equipment she didn't have on her person, unfortunately the journey back to the headquarters meant Genji would be left very scarred.
Working on him for the next few days gave her some relief, but despite her efforts to keep his existence under wraps, he was discovered and overwatch used this opportunity to do some more good. His recovery was now conditional, Genji was charged with the responsibility of bringing down the shimada clan. Mercy of course, was given the responsibility to ensure that he was no longer just a man, but a weapon and that he possessed the ability to single handedly destroy his evil family. In a bind, she did what was needed, unsure of what this would mean for the poor man she had found on the street...
Soon after, the inevitable befell Overwatch. Jack and Gabriel had their infamous fallout. The details of which Mercy would not want to relive even in her worst nightmares. Her conscience would not let her walk away from the bloodied Reyes. But fixing him required measures she had never tried before. Using certain forever proliferating cells, she was able to begin the process of regeneration, but the damaged body was still decaying, what she created... She had never thought was possible...
Saving two men, but by changing the very fibre of their existence, Mercy began questioning her part in the fate of the people she had saved and the methods she had used to do it. The woman became a wandering servant of those plagued by the war waged in the name of peace.
Now, when she hears her only family call out to her again. Angela is at odds with herself once more, but cannot help herself and responds...
