It was late, not enough that people were long asleep, but enough that the streets were mostly cleared. He liked the dark better, the sun was a cruel stab into his eyes and he could move around undetected much easier by the cover of the night. He didn't need to be especially sneaky tonight, but it was habit by now, so he was currently skulking over the tops of buildings and watching, using the technology they'd implanted to read heat signals, it made up for where his near blind eyes fell short.
He'd been reluctant to go on this assignment, though he hadn't made that clear to his betters, he'd agreed without hesitation, but now that he was alone and on the job, there was a twinge of regret in what he was doing.
She'd been the only one there who treated him like he was a person, she never hit him or yelled at him like the rest of them did, she was never soft, that was dangerous where they were, but she took care of the blind teen nonetheless. And now he was hunting her, with orders to do what he had to do, she knew too much, and in the world he lived in that was dangerous.
He had a good idea of where she would be, so he was quick to shimmy down the building to the alley below, waiting for any sign of her.
