There was something powerful about the realization that something amazing had been staring him in the face for years, right under his nose, and he hadn't even bothered to look at it. It had been a couple of days now since Jess' confrontation with his mother, really it had been rather benign, and in the end he was glad she'd done it. The conversation had been difficult, but it was one they'd needed to have, his mother needed to know how hurt he was and he'd been too kind and forgiving to say it. He was thankful for Jess for that, for a lot of things.
One thing Ana had said had settled in Mido's stomach like a warm weight, not unpleasant, but confusing and strange. He'd never considered Jessica as anything more than his friend, surely when they were younger and in less than savory places in their lives, those feelings weren't even on his radar, he was just glad at the time to not be alone in a world where he felt utterly isolated and lost in the dark. But throughout every rough day and agonizing night she'd been there to kick him into living, instead of just wasting and withering. She'd assured him day and night that one day, he'd be glad he stuck around. She'd worked herself exhausted to feed them both on days where he was too depressed and heavy to even move. Had he ever thanked her?
He supposed on some level the feeling had always been there, she'd always meant more to him than just a friend, but Ana's choice of words had made him realize just what that meant in the current time. They were both older, older and in much better more stable places, was thinking such thoughts really so bad now? People half their age thought such things after knowing each other for weeks, he'd known Jess for years now. There was something powerful about realizing that maybe someone did love you beyond friendship, and there was something even more so about realizing that he loved her back.
He was pondering over these thoughts as he waited for her to get home, she'd been staying with him for a while while she was in Chicago. He had a coffee in his hand as he sat at the kitchen table, sipping it with a pondering expression, he had a lot of things he wanted to say, and he wasn't one to mince words or beat around the bush, so when she came back he would probably end up just saying it. He only hoped he didn't weird her out.
