The afternoon was still warm, although still not to the temperatures they had been used to in the Outback. Both adjusted by adding on a few more layers, Sam more matter-of-factly, Skitter a little sulky about suddenly being cold most of the time.
Honestly though, she'd been adjusting surprisingly well to being away from the only home she'd ever known. Sam had worried that should such an event ever take place she'd take such a complete change of lifestyle might well break her...but she'd once again proven herself more smart and aware then he sometimes remembered to give her credit for, he thought, a little ashamed of himself for it. That wasn't to say there hadn't been moments, moments where everything was all too much for her and she melted down into an angry, incoherent mess, but they had not been as frequent as they might have been. He mostly just needed to get through to her that she couldn't just take and scavenge whatever she liked anymore as those things weren't just up for the taking here.
And while he'd never admit it, it was all bit of a culture shock for Sam too, a man who'd spent the majority of his life fighting and scraping just to eat, just to not be killed in his own territory, to come to a place were people were friendly and still held to civilized rules, a place where he could sleep without worry, take a hot shower, eat as much as he liked...there was a part of him that still didn't trust it.
Both were taking a bit of a break from the inside of the base in the fields outside around it, while not a destroyed wasteland, just being outside felt a little more familiar and comfortable to them both, Skitter ran ahead, always looking, looking for whatever hidden things she might find, Sam followed behind at a more leisure pace, hands in his pockets.
