It had taken some wheedling, but Jess had finally gotten the address out of Kathryn to where this place was. But her friend needed her right now...and besides...Overwatch. She couldn't just sit back at home and pretend that wasn't a thing that was happening.
So she'd thrown what she figured she'd need for a couple weeks being gone into the trunk and backseat of her hatchback and headed out across the country towards Indiana.
It was well past dark and pouring rain a couple days later when she finally found herself getting to what she assumed was close. There wasn't much out here but a lot of corn and fields and stuff. Her GPS wasn't super helpful out here either, becoming more vague as she got close. On the seat next to her was an open box of take-out, food eaten on the run because she was eager to finally get there and not be in this car anymore. She reached over and blindly stabbed, lifting a forkful of noodles to her mouth before stabbing the fork back in the box and grabbing her phone. She dialed Kathryn, waiting for her friend to pick up.
"Hey! Hi! So yeah...I think I'm close...but like...this is just the crazy land of corn and stuff...so..."
A pause.
"Yeah, I went past that gas station...uh-huh. Uh-huh. Yeah, I did that too. Yeah, okay, I remember that sign too."
Another pause.
"OKay yeah. I can do that. Ahhhh....yeah, okay. I went too far. I'll go back."
She found a driveway and turned the car around, phone still tucked up to her ear and shoulder.
"Okay yeah, I see where you mean now. But you know what Kathryn...like...this place is weird. I've seen this movie before and spoiler alert, it doesn't end well. So...y'know, when I get there I'm not getting out of my car until I see you and I see that you're not a possessed zombie with an axe in your back or something, 'kay? If I'm still in the car at least I can make a run for it."
Faint laughter was heard on the other side and she grinned, joining in. "Not even kidding about that. I'm waiting for you outside."
Her headlights pointed at what she assumed was the place and she pulled up closer, noticing a few other cars parked around and pretty sure this was the place. Well, she'd wait a few minutes then maybe venture in anyway. Although this still felt like the sort of settling where some horror movie stuff might happen...maybe it was just all the rain...
