"Okay so you've come for my comprehensive compiling of all information we have on the Gabriel program, and the whole Hephaestus thing. And let me tell you this has been a wild time," mused the giddy fishkid as he threw all the date into a single screen and spread it out over the front of his tank. "Where to even begin, this has taken a while to get together. Lets start with the basics right?" Jack nodded.
"Basics would be good," he agreed waiting for the long winded genius to get on with it.
Whiskey felt like Jack didn't appreciate his verbose nature, oh well the small minded were like that after all. "Starting at the beginning people discovered how useful tiny little robots could be to heal injuries, cure cancer, fix blindness and improve brain functions, you know all of those wonderful things that we now have lurking around in hospitals. Nanomachines are wonderful. However they're limited in their usefulness by how much data they can reasonably store, and they need to be controlled externally meaning that to get the most use of them you have to be close to a controller. Also there was a ban on self-replicating nanomachines so you also had to make more before further usage," he started and already Jack realized this was going to be a long few hours. Whiskey just loved to talk and he'd get off on tangents easily.
"Okay so nanomachines are useful I know that, Angela's staff and my fields are nanotech," he replied.
"Well now what if say you wanted a self-sufficient colony of Nanomachines continually working within a human body? Say to improve muscle performance, increase stamina, turn of pain receptors, sharpen senses...you know super soldiery stuff? Well you'd need some way to keep track of, and control those little bots without interacting with them externally or giving them just simple tasks. As you'd need hundreds of different individually programmed bots to do that and that is in no way practical. Introducing a Super Organism," Whiskey said pointing at the theoretical information about such a thing. "Super Organisms are like hive organisms only they all work together as a single entity. We've only ever seen such Super Organisms in things like Protugese Man o' Wars and similar single celled colony monstrosities. Even in them we're not convinced they aren't all just independent organisms that specialize themselves to better survive as a colony. It's confusing and weird..." He was getting off on a tangent again. Jack cleared his throat.
"Okay Super Organisms how does this relate to the Gabriel and Hephaestus thing?"
"Well unlike cells in our body which require specialized cells to bring them food, water and instructions a Super Organism is made up of independent organisms, that work together to create a single entity, or perhaps a single Intelligence, and in the case of our George, that'd be Hephaestus. Hephaestus doesn't exist really, he's a million little robots all combining their minuscule data and processing powers to create a personality. They just borrow George's preexisting architecture to express it. How clever is that? A human brain is a lower energy computational device, a million little machines tapping into that resource and using their own bodies as alternate conduits to alter its function is an ingenius way to make them independent. They don't need to be programmed to do each task they can as a Super Unit assign each other tasks and react on the fly to changing circumstances just like a person might," Whiskey explained. That was a lot to take in and the Old Soldier nodded.
"So Hephaestus is a bunch of nanomachines, that combined make a personality? Why is his so shit then can't they fix that?"
"Of course not, I told you that self-replicating Nanomachines were banned, but these guys decided not to care much about the ban, Hephaestus' little bots replace old ones through replicating using excess materials that would otherwise be stored as fat or flushed out. Like the excess nutrient dosages humans get from the many fortified foods you eat. 90% of that breakfast cereal is flushed out uselessly, so these little bots take and construct another little bot to replace old ones. However like cell replication errors can happen. I wouldn't call it cancer, but data loss from old machine to new machine is to be expected, the more times a file is copied and transferred means loss of data." Whiskey sighed. "Which means Hephaestus is as unstable as a dementia patient because there's no way for him to over come that loss through adaptation because the super organism doesn't know what corrupted and what isn't. The human brain is far more resilient than a machine. As you can tell from cybernetics. George lost an arm but the brain still knows how to move the arm, replacing it with a metal one takes getting used to be new connections form and viola the arm is as natural as the one he lost. Hephaestus has trouble coping with lost information as he's in a sort of stand-by mode consistently."
"Okay so what about this Gabriel?" Jack asked.
"Gabriel is the "Beta" version of this tech while Hephaestus is more Pre-alpha. Tweaks, fixes, and stabilization, Gabriel is also entirely in control. Scanning the brain of Gabriel after the nanomachines were knocked out shows brain death, this means whoever the person was they aren't anymore. Now that means the Nanomachines don't suffer the loss of data like Hephaestus does. They are entirely integrated with the host tissues and enjoy all the flexibility of a human brain. Especially in the training department, while Hephaestus has almost no control over his abilities thanks to never having time to practice or the ability to imprint that practice into muscle memory or long term memory; Gabriel enjoys all the luxuries of a humans ability to learn. Think of Hephaestus like a learning disabled child, while Gabriel is an adult whose finished high school. Both intelligence are capable of learning all that they need to but only one will manage to retain and use that information."
"So what does that mean about George?"
Whiskey shrugged. "Well George is the problem for Hephaestus, the nanomachines can't take over George because George's brain continually "corrects" it's self. It has an established personality, that self-checks. No amount of rewriting will stop the self-check, George is George and Hephaestus being a weak artificial intelligence can't overwrite that," he replied. "Just like I can't take over George's or anyone's brain, neither can Hephaestus, so he's stuck in a more raw state. The Nanomachines however don't know this and respond to the bodies needs, meaning keeping it healthy, and alive. It really is fascinating. George wasn't even the correct candidate, he basically only survived because he wasn't brain dead."
Jack nodded. "Right. Okay uhm but that all in a file send it to my personal station and I will read more about that later, so Talon has access to the "better" version of this technology how many Gabriels are there then?"
"Well if Talon managed to get all 7 of the Angels working then...7," Whiskey said with a laugh. "The Greeks all burned out apart from Hephaestus so no need to worry about them. However if Talon is clever enough to make use of the research I don't know how many super soldier intelligence are out there."
Disturbing, but it seemed for now he had plenty of info, perhaps too much info. His head already hurt, maybe it was just the way Whiskey talked that gave him headaches. "Thanks for the hardwork, keep looking into it, maybe we can use this tech to our advantage if there's call for it."
"As you like sir."
