Ana had called together all of the agents well enough to do so, the others she would take the time to go and talk to later on, to check in on them and fill them in. But there were some things that had to be said before anything else could happen, too many things were already happening too fast and she couldn’t just allow everything to spiral out of control like it seemed so close to doing.
She stood tall and proud in front of them, head up, back ramrod straight, hands tucked behind the small of her back. She looked out at the faces in front of her, most she knew, a few she didn’t, even now.
“Good afternoon. I’m sure you all know who I am. I know most of you, those I don’t, I apologize for not having spoken to you sooner. But to each of you, let me say, welcome to the new Overwatch. I am personally thankful for each one of you who is here, for whatever reasons you have decided to come. Every person, every bit of aid we have here is needed.” She allowed herself a small smile across the group, but it only lasted a moment.
“From the start, you have all been part of Commander Morrison’s team. However, with him currently indisposed, until he returns to his full duties I will be taking command of this operation. Any questions or concerns that you would otherwise direct to him, you will now direct to me.” It took effort but she kept her voice calm and level, no hint of the deep concern for her friend and his health, she would rather he be here now, instead of her having to do this.
“I also want to take this opportunity to talk about some problem areas, and some changes that need to take place within this team. One of the reasons the original Overwatch team worked as well as it did, was because we knew each other. We trusted each other. We knew what the procedures were for different situations. We knew how the others thought, how they fought. This team…we are not there yet. But we can be. We *need* to be. Because otherwise we’re just a random group of people who happen to live in the same place, and sometimes go off on dangerous adventures together. And while that might be well and good…it is not how we stop Talon.”
She paused again to look over everyone. “I will not lie to you…we are outmatched on every front with them. But that is all the more reason that we have to learn to work together. To fight together. We can’t take the fight directly to them, so we have to start fighting smarter, in ways they don’t expect us to. I know some of you have experience in these areas, I will talk to each of you later about this.”
“Time is precious right now, but it is essential that we carve ourselves out some time here and now…for our teammates to recover, for us to gain some cohesion, for us to best determine how to use each of our strengths to its full potential in this setting. Until further notice, all new missions and operations must be cleared before being undertaken. I also want to note that while as I mentioned before, we can use all the help we can get…the addition of new agents and others to the roster must also be cleared before they are given information on where to find us. I do not want to see people who just…randomly…show up because someone told them we were here. It is a security risk we cannot afford right now.”
“If there are questions or concerns on any of this, I will do my best to answer your questions. Or, my office is on the upper level, and I will discuss any of these matters privately, if you would prefer.”
