This had been the end, the last moments, heavy pulse rifle dropping out of his hands he jumped on the man. Reaper, Gabriel Reyes, the man who'd destroyed everything, who'd ruined everything. His fists pounded into the mask, again and again, and again; his gloves split on the shattered edges, his knuckles bruised but he kept going. All the rage of his life after Overwatch, the justice he demanded was finally being done. He eventually became so exhausted he just sat back on his knees, hands a blood mess, the mask shattered. He tossed the pieces away, the face of Reyes, what did he look like after all these years?
Jack furrowed his brows...wait, no, this wasn't possible. He didn't recognize this face, this man wasn't even latino, he didn't look like Reyes at all. Of course it was, this was the man who'd destroyed Overwatch. 76 stood and took a few stumbling steps back. He remembered it, the explosion...the betrayal. He'd betrayed them, Gabriel had. Jack...Ana, Mercy all of them; he'd betrayed all of them. A mistake it'd been a mistake, a bad lead, bad info. He grabbed his head, ripping the visor off and throwing it away. "You sonofabitch, Reyes," he screeched, as he grabbed the trench coat, shaking the man. "Where is he? Where's Gabriel Reyes?" He received no answer, he'd beaten any sense out of the man's head.
This wasn't possible, he'd done it, he'd gotten rid of the Reaper, but...he was so empty. Face to the sky he let out a primal scream, what happened? He was joined by someone, were they a threat? Here to finish him off. "Gabe?" a voice asked, he recognized it, McCree? Jesse McCree he'd brought him with him of course. He turned to look at him.
"It's not Gabriel..." he murmured pointing at the Reaper. "I don't know this man..."
"Gabe..." He repeated it again. Why did he keep saying that name? Gabriel wasn't here!
"I told you he's not here! Gabriel isn't here we have to keep looking!" He stopped as the Cowboy looked confused. He'd thrown away his visor...right McCree had never seen him without it.
"I'm sorry about my face..." he said vaguely, he knew it wasn't a pretty sight, the burns and damage was rather severe. It'd all healed into some rather intense scarring. "But he-"
He was silenced again as the cowboys eyes widened. "...I thought you were Jack..." he said with a very confused and quiet tone. What? Of course he was. Why was Jesse giving him that look? "You said Gabriel had done it...he'd messed up."
"He did...he betrayed all of us, why are you looking at me like that Jesse? I know I've been through hell but don't you recognize me?" 76 snapped at the cowboy. Stop looking at him like that, McCree, stop it. Why did he still feel so empty after that? Why wouldn't that feeling of disgust go away?
McCree took an uncertain step forward, reaching out and touching the man's face. "Gabe...Jack's dead isn't he?" he asked softly, gently as one might speak to a child.
"No I'm right here, Jesse...I'm right here..." he said throat so dry it came out a rasp. "Why are you looking at me like that? Why are you saying that name? Gabriel isn't here..." He swallowed tightly. "Gabriel got away...he killed everyone...he-"
"Made a mistake. You made a mistake," McCree said more forcefully. 76 rubbed his temple. Jesse wasn't making any sense. "It's okay, I know how you felt about him; god do I know, it isn't your fault. You made a mistake." He didn't make a mistake, Gabriel had sold them all out.
"Why are you saying that Jesse? Why? Gabriel isn't here...Reyes isn't here, Reyes caused all of this..." his voice had become so small as he sunk back to the ground, face in his hands. "He killed me...he did this...he..." His voice was cut off by sobs. "Jack...Jack I'm...I'm sorry..." The cowboy knelt down, hand on the man's shoulder not sure what to do. "I'm sorry...."
This was going to be hard to explain. Jesse sighed, Jack hadn't made it out of that mess, Jack wasn't here right now; just a confused, broken old man, who'd gone a quest for vengeance against himself, his own demons. "Gabriel, it's okay, come on, we have to go;" he said softly, pulling the man back up. The cowboy could see the tears, the dirt and dust; this jacket had been Jacks. A prized possession, it must have been in the rubble. He gave a sigh. He wasn't sure how to feel about this, everything he'd assumed was wrong.
"...I'm so sorry..." hissed the man he was moving along. Jesse snatching up the things Reyes had dropped along the way; they couldn't be linked to this. His eyes looking back at the stranger Gabriel had given his name, Reaper, he was just a Talon operative. It was just bad luck he'd been singled out, the Blackwatch symbol hanging from his belt must have made Gabe mark him as the personification of his own demons.
"It's okay..." softly, so softly. The evac ship lifted off as they got on. Jesse had to figure out how he was going to explain this one. 76 had curled up on a bench, and continued to sob. How did one hate themselves so much they became someone else? Jack and Gabe had been more than close, perhaps this was him atoning for that loss.
