It was quite late at the Watchpoint, most everyone had called it a night ages ago, the lights on dim settings and the place asleep. Except for one light that still burned in Ana's office.
She sat over her desk, staring at the computer screen with a grim, determined expression. It was funny, how she hated doing paperwork...until she was trying to avoid something, even if that something was just being alone with her own thoughts. And it was this, or going to bed...alone. And staring at the ceiling...alone. And running over all the countless mistakes she'd made in her life. Yeah, that paperwork was sounding really good about right now.
She wasn't even sure what she'd been thinking coming back here. Some sort of desperate grab to retake her glory days? Except...these weren't *her* glory days anymore. It was this younger crowd, with their brilliant minds and big ideas and wars they fought on platforms she only barely understood. Advanced tech and hacking and viruses...what did she know about these things? About fighting on that level? She found herself feeling very old. Old and tired.
And for this what had she given up? What did she have now? A daughter...who wouldn't talk to her. A lover...who wouldn't talk to her. Although since she was being blunt with herself tonight, she'd burned those bridges a long time ago. She wasn't sure what she thought would happen, that she would waltz back into their lives and they'd happily welcome her back and then what? They'd go on to be the happy family that fought crime and injustice together?
She leaned back in her chair and rubbed her temples, the start of a headache building up behind them. "You're such an idiot." She spoke into the thin air, heaving a heavy sigh.
It didn't happen often, but she was feeling desperately and wretchedly sorry for herself tonight, and she hated herself a little bit for it. She needed a distraction...
