The clear sky over Volskaya was marked by the appearance of a single Russian Federation Gunship, it flew over the modern buildings, the giant walkers standing like silent gods, brooding and perhaps annoyed by this metal knat.
The world sure had changed, Yana thought to herself as the helicopter flew over the buildings, the city was beyond beautiful. Even with her enhanced reaction speed she could not take it all in, nor she doubted she ever would.
The helicopter lowered itself towards the ground, gently descending onto a constructed landing pad specifically for this event. Yana felt herself frown for a moment at the cameras and the crowd she picked out. The red headed sniper heroine turned her gaze upon the well suited elderly gentleman who flew with her on this particular flight.
"You told me there would not be any cameras or a crowd." Her tone carried the gentle hint of accusation but also the slightest hint an unwelcome amusement.
"Yes just like you told me Yana that you were going to come dressed in a parade uniform." The elderly man retorted his blue eyes flashing with amusement.
Yana snorted. "Not going to happen."
"See? Besides the people need heroes and you're the best one we've got."
"But I'm not from this period."
"That doesn't matter to them, to me, or to you... You're here and that is all that matters."
The helicopter touched down on the pad, a soldier opened the door, letting in a blast of harsh cold air. Yana exited first, the crowd roaring in approval followed by the elderly gentleman. Yana drew her gaze swiftly across the crowd, taking it too much detail at once. It caused a spike of pain in her head. The elderly gentleman tapped her on the elbow, indicating that they needed to move. Escorted by the soldier, the pair marched past other soldiers who stood at attention as they headed towards a imposing brick structure, four stories high she noted.
"The Russia Federation needs heroes, heroes give hope, hope for the future and for a better tomorrow."
He ran a hand through his fading silver hair. "Now smile some more will you? Whilst we all still have something to smile about."
In front of two thick oak wooden doors, two soldiers snapped a crisp salute before opening them. Yana found herself walking into a ornate hallway, men and women in uniform saluting her or clapping. "Well doctor I am guessing this is some elaborate medal ceremony?" She raised an eyebrow ever so slightly as she walked.
He chuckled quietly. "Yes... But bare in mind I said to call my Nickoli, I might be a doctor however I prefer my personal name."
"Old habits die hard."
"Regrettable stuff what you went through."
More hallways followed, stairs, till finally they entered a heavily guarded hall, filled with far too many people and cameras.
She shook hands and exchanged saluted, before the ceremony started proper when the plum form of General Brovien handed her a medal, a Hero of the Russian Federation medal. She stared at the beautiful object with a quiet sense of wonder. It looked vaguely similar to another medal she was rewarded with once, just prior to being frozen.
"Maverick we are beyond lucky to have you back." He said. "This is the Hero of the Russian Federation Medal, awarded to those who's actions and service has saved the Russian Federation and ennobled us all."
....
Fifteen minutes later.
Yana or Maverick as many people knew her now as managed to break away from the cameras for a brief while. She reached the roof top, though it too possessed it's share of guards. The cold wind wiped past her, causing her pony tail to whip with wild madness. The world had changed far too much, far too quickly. Here she found herself required to play the role of hero, she was no hero... No one should want to emulate her actions, at least in her opinion.
She did not desire for anyone to follow in her footsteps, what she endured in order to gain these skills was beyond nightmarish. However, those skills enabled her to save Russia once before long ago. Now she possessed the rare opportunity to do so again, in the future.
She turned her attention over to the towering mechs. Such inhuman technology, Yana thought to herself, a similar dark technology created her.
Yet those very mechs managed to keep Russia safe from the great evil that was the Omni. The evil machines were almost as bad as the Germans she fought in World War 2.
