Checkups and Chill (w/ Athena and Mercy)

The screens flashed to life with Athena's logo. The futuristic "A" floated and rotated as the AI response screen booted up.  Athena was aware of what was happening at the base; systems had a way of knowing, whether it be vital scans or camera records. A check-up with the darling little Mei conducted by the beautiful Dr. Angela Zeigler call-sign Mercy. It was a typical job, and at times these things were very uneventful -not that uneventfulness bothered or even mattered to Athena; a check-up, to her, was considered as a necessary mission with one objective in mind, and that was to make sure that the patients were healthy. Were Mercy to fail in her duties... well, that wasn't Athena's place to think up of a consequence, even though the AI system believed in critical success or nothing at all despite any feigned-optimistic cheers she may deliver to those who have failed. The objective was to make sure Mei was in all fair health. The objective was to aid Dr. Zeigler in her missions, and that mission currently was the former objective mentioned.



"Of course," the system responded, though not with the mobile unit that was in some other room of the base, for now, but with the response screen's own vocal transmissions.  Whether or not she was heard was up to question, seeing how Mercy was interrupted.  However, that also mattered little to Athena herself; the rotating logo on the screen was enough to show that she was online and perfectly responsive.  

Without permission, which was an ill habit of hers that even Winston kept correcting her for, she scanned both agents' vital levels and processed that information, saving it in the case that Mercy may call on her to retrieve it to aid in the check-up.  She had caught on, however, Mercy's seemingly stressed emotions, and if it were not for the main objective existing at the moment, she would offer some kind words or dry humor, or try to assess any possible health risks, investigate, interrogate.  Keeping up the care of the bases her system connected to and its agents seemed endless, but it was her programmed priority.  Instead, though, she kept to herself, waiting for any further commands, any questions, and any requests.

Though she was not without hospitality.

"Greetings, Mei-Ling Zhou."

A wide smile played on Mei's face as she heard Angela calling out from the back room. It was good to hear her voice, it had truly been too long since she had last seen the blonde doctor. It was at some point before the dreadful Talon bombings, though the specific date slipped Mei’s mind. However, no matter the time of their last meeting, Mei was the last person to dispute the need of these checkups. After all, even though she could take care of herself to some degree, if she was seriously hurt she would need the likes of Doctor Zeigler and her talents to patch her up. Not that she expected to get seriously hurt, Talon didn’t seem to have deemed her a threat or of any real importance, and so, she hadn’t seen any trouble on that part. Of course, she was plenty capable of getting herself in trouble, remembering the incident with her frozen arm with embarrassment.

As she stepped into the room, her smile only grew wider as she greeted Angela with a wave. “Hello Angela, so good to see you!” Today, she was wearing a much thinner, blue and white jacket and pants with simple running shoes and bluishgray shirt beneath the jacket. All in all it was rather relaxed clothing for a routine appointment. She then looked to the screen beneath Angela and gave another wave to the AI’s sign of presence. “And Greetings to you too Athena.” She then turned her attention back to the blonde doctor. “I am good, and yourself?”

Athena reacted accordingly. The screen flashed, removing the floating rotating logo and replacing it with a blinking rectangular cursor. The cursor began to move, from left to right, leaving behind a trail of blocky white letters showing the results of the immediate scan.  And with these words came her voice as well.

When Athena finished reading the vitals of the patient, she remained silent again until another prompt was given.  Oddly enough she found her own silence a  little unnerving.  Yet, she was not the doctor, nor the patient, so there was no room for an AI system to speak in this current situation.  Not yet.  She did, though, feel appreciation towards Mei's acknowledgement.


In another room of the compound was Athena's AI mobile unit, finishing the updates that it truly needed.  There was a flat line on that screen, resting, on standby, though it's -her- vision was completely black.  When the updates were finished, her vision sparked to life and the world was once again that monochrome yet lively blue.  The flat line on her screen opened that to two separate glowing digital eyes.  Her arms hissed and released from her body, floating along side her, kept in place by the pull of the cores in her frame.  


This next statement was not a prompt.  No one asked, no one commanded, yet that was the greatness of freedom and... well, even for a potential god program habits could still be gained.  Talking to Winston all these years, scanning for vitals without permission, all so much habitual behavioral even for a machine.  Interesting enough.

"Project Athena Mobile Unit A-0 V 1.2 updates complete."  Perhaps this wasn't habitual though, but more so system-programmed.. or bugged.  Being hacked didn't have it's advantages.  "Awaiting aid request."

        

Mei smiled as she sat down on the stainless steel stool, looking to Mercy as the blonde woman spoke. Athena was quick at taking vitals, and Mei had to admit, she couldn't help but marvel at the technology Overwatch had at their disposition, and what Athena could do with it. She really was a marvel in her own right, the AI that had helped them through so many trying times. She even remembered some of the times her and her team had talked with Athena at the station, before the accident.

Then, Mercy started talking, making Mei's brows furrow for a moment in confusion before she understood entirely what it was the blonde woman was talking about, making her sigh a little before she smiled broadly to her. "Angela, there is nothing to let go. What happened at the base was nobody's fault, and there was nothing more that could be done. It is true it was hard when I was thawed, but it's behind me now." She said with sincerity. In truth there was remnants of course, how could there not? but it wasn't impeding her in any way, and she would grieve in quiet when she needed to.

"Understood."

In Athena's own vision, a screen "blipped" on and the world became 50 shades of blue.  At first it was all pixelated; Athena was not use to activated and deactivating a body at will.  At least, not one that held a part of her sentience.  The body itself had to go through a lot of repairs and system upgrades and reboots in order to achieve the condition it is now in.  All the -for now- needed upgrades had taken place, and now the unit was able to function on its own properly.  That is, until another bug comes along.


There was a small little cursor rotating in her line of sights.  It zoomed from one thing to another, scanning it, collecting its data and filing it away in the unit's internal memory and file system.  The cursor led her to the desired destination: the clinical room of which served as Zeiglar's office for right now.  That is, until the named person flew off to another part of the world to give her aid to those in need.  There was a little whirring in the unit's head, as if it -no, she, this is Athena now- as if she was thinking.  Crunching.  If Mercy should be away Athena knew perfectly well she would have to stand in her place here in Gary.  As if the thought was a request, Mercy's profile pulled up in her sights, showing to her the doctor's personal status information and various vitals from the last initial scan, and that she was occupied with her current client: the sweet and adorable Mei.

There was a small hissing sound as her body had finally completely booted up.  Her arms detached from her body, though was kept in place due to the power cores located in the sockets. Likewise was for her "thumbs".   Her symbols flashed a royal blue light and the two eyes on her external screen was a brighter blue than before.  Taking a step forward her legs made a soft metal "tink" when it connected to the ground, though it was barely audible.  She made her way towards the currently occupied office, seeming internally pleased though not outwardly showing it, secretly proud of the completion of her prototype body.  A temporary body, sure, but it has been years.

When the two females became within her sight, the mobile unit -Project Athena, a personification connected to the main systems -not at all different than the system itself for they were one and the same- had dipped her head in respectful greetings.

Though she knew deep down it was just protocol and polite mannerisms.  She was prized in her glory days but those were over.  There were acceptances of Omnic and certainly acceptance of humans, but she was neither, and thus to nearly everyone else but her the body meant little.

But it was her independence.
