Christmas was about the only time this place became tolerable. Bright and cheerful and festive, everyone happy and smiling. The rest of this year, this place was small and dull and completely predictable. No one was overtly terrible...at least not out where anyone else could see them...but they weren't glamorous or exciting either.
Kathryn couldn't wait to get out of here. She tucked away a little money each time she was paid, she had nearly enough now to get both her and Tom on a Greyhound to Los Angeles, with a little extra to live on until they could get working and settled. Kathryn was a smart girl, she knew it might take a while for things to really take off for them there, and as much as she hated having to stay here longer...it was better than getting there and having everything fall apart because she couldn't wait to prepare just a little better. If they could put up with this just a little longer, they'd never have to see this hellhole or their mother ever again, and it was a thought that kept her going.
So she put on her best customer service smile and busied herself tidying up the store around her as she did. She paused to answer questions or help customers as she did, glancing towards the large windows at the front. The light was already fading, and was undoubtedly getting really cold already, but she could see little bits of light from the tree in the center of town and it made her smile. Christmas here wasn't bad. But she could only imagine how much better and more glamorous it would be in one of the big cities. She'd never actually been, she could only imagine.
