The day stretched on into afternoon as Sarah sat on the porch with a book, a large grey tabby curled up next to her, his front paws stretched up into her lap. She scratched behind the cat's ears with one hand, eyes on the pages of her book but not really thinking about what she was reading.
She was thinking about the newest arrival to the ranch, Jamie he said his name was. He was angry, she could tell with how he barely looked at anyone all through dinner last night and couldn't seem to wait to get out of there as soon as the meal was finished. But on top of being angry...she thought maybe, just maybe...he was a little afraid too. Sometimes new people who came were just angry all the way through, nothing but anger and violence. She stayed away from them...not out of fear...there wasn't really much she was afraid of, from the vague shadowy memories of the time before, she seemed to feel that somehow...she'd seen enough things that after that...anything short of those types of things...just wasn't scary anymore. But sometimes others who came here were afraid, under it all. They were in a new place, they didn't know what would happen to them here. She could understand how that would feel.
She looked up at the sound of one of the trucks pulling into the yard, a couple of the hands in the cab and bed returning from work further out. She looked over them curiously, the newcomer was among them, she wondered how his first day out among them had gone. She hadn't really gotten to talk to...or she supposed listen to him much last night and she found herself growing curious about him, just as she was whenever new people showed up. She didn't see many new faces out here.
