When it's all crashing down [Junkrat]

Junkrat had never been a sleeper, he slept when his body and brain forced him to, but usually he preferred to always be going. He was a wired young man on the best of days, absolutely hyper on the worst, it was what tended to cause him to get so bored around here, while they were all laying low, he was stuck with too much energy and nowhere to put it.

Late nights were the worst, when everyone else was asleep and he was left to the silence and his own thoughts, because despite how chipper and energetic he was, his mind was a scary place, it had been for a long time.

Tonight his wandering found himself heading towards the kitchens, looking surprised when he spotted Kathryn sitting there looking absolutely morose. He had never really had any extended interactions with George's kids, mostly because the man seemed keen on keeping him far away from them, but he liked her, Kathryn seemed like a go-getter, a trait he could appreciate.

Thought right now he noticed she looked less than go-getty. He frowned and slipped into the kitchen, taking a moment to get things ready for a cup of tea, clearing his throat, "can't sleep? Me neither..." He laughed, glancing back at her as he got the kettle ready and put the tea on, "yew look like a dingo done ate yer lunch...Wot's up?" He tilted his head as he turned to sit at the table across from her, looking genuinely curious.

Kathryn started as the other came to join her, but relaxed when she saw who it was. She'd seen him around...she was pretty sure he was some sort of criminal or something...but this was Overwatch and they didn't seem to be freaking out to kick him out so...there had to be some kind of reason for that, right...? And he didn't seem like he was here to be aggressive at her so...well...she was kind of glad to have someone to talk to.

She made a face at him. "Yeah. Just...staring at the ceiling and thinking all about how I should do stuff, but I don't know what to do...you know?" She took another sip of her coffee and pulled more of a face. "You ever get that way?" She asked, getting up and dumping out the coffee in the sink. She was kind of a coffee snob and she wasn't ashamed of admitting it...and that stuff just wasn't cutting it. "Like...my life is suddenly all crazy lately. It's weird."

Junkrat rested his cheek in his hand and studied her curiously, "yer Kathryn right?" He held out a metal hand for her to shake and grinned, "Jamison. Or Jamie, Rat, I've gained a lot of nicknames." He snickered, then cleared his throat and looked her over thoughtfully, "I do get that way, actually...A lot." He lifted his head to scratch his chin, glancing at her when she pulled that face, "Here hang on." He stood while he spoke and chuckled, "Jack hides th'good shit, locks it up, stingy old fart." He made a mischievous face as he picked at a locked cabinet, "I'll jus tellim' I was sick of th'shitty coffee they keep puttin' in there. Yew look like yew need it." He pulled back when he had it open with a 'ta da' before sitting back down.

It took her words to spark a memory, "oi thas' right...Yew were close t'being in La when...Ugh...Mate I know exactly wot yer feelin'." He was very intimate with the feelings that were plaguing her, "everythin' is normal and...Stable...An' then BOOM. Literately. Everythin' yew know is gone. Right?" He shuddered, "yew end up turned arse up an' th'world don't make sense. Right?" He nodded, he understood those feelings all too well, "I was seven." He didn't elaborate on that just yet, "it is weird...It never stops bein' weird." Was that bad to say? It was true, but he didn't want to sound discouraging.

Her eyes lit up at the better coffee choices suddenly revealed to her as she crossed to the cabinet, pulling choices out. "Hey, you want some if I make it?" She offered with a glance over at him.

She frowned a bit at the mention of Los Angeles, still a bit of an involuntary shiver. "Seven?" She asked, looking at him for a long moment, digging around through her memory for a few moments. "You were...Australia...right? That...yeah, that'd be messed up." She sympathized. "I just...yeah. That exactly. Everything was normal...the biggest worry in my life was...I dunno, film deadlines...stuff that seems both important and not now...and...I mean..." She paused, looking at him with a haunted look. "I was on vacation...I was off playing on a beach while everything was...and I'm glad I'm not dead but there's a part of me that feels bad..."

Junkrat chuckled and shook his head, "nah, thanks mate, but I try t'avoid coffee..." He snickered, "M'wired enough without that!" He came to stand beside her while she looked the choices over, "Jack prob'ly wont even notice, old man might've forgotten these were in here." There was a cheeky tone in his voice at that, but his expression became serious when she spoke and he cleared his throat.

"Yeh. My memory of anythin' before th'blast is fuzzy, but I remember that day with perfect clarity." He wished he could forget that, but some memories clung like cobwebs, "I hid in our bunker, an' when I came out everything was gone an' I was alone." He went quiet for a moment at that, then smiled at her, "it throws yer whole life outta whack, yew don't know up from down...Sucks, right?" He turned his attention to the tea and looked thoughtful, "th'guilt fer survivin's th'worst part though innit?"

He kept his gaze focused on pouring a cup of tea, "because all yew can think is...I survived...Everyone else is dead an' not me...An' yew think yew'd be happy but...Yer not. Not fully." He swallowed and chuckled, "when we heard th'sirens mum told me t'go hide...An' I was scared so I did...I didn't even think t'make sure she was be'ind me. She wasn't." He finally looked up at her with a sad expression, "yew wanna feel lucky that yew lived but yew still feel like maybe yew should have been there. Right?" These were thoughts he never really shared with people, because most people didn't get it, but she seemed like she needed to hear it from someone who did get it.

"I won't take that much of his coffee...just...God. I need a Starbucks in the worst way." She shook her head, taking her choice and reclosing the cabinet behind her.

She started the coffee then turned to listen to him. As he spoke her eyes suddenly welled up with tears as he pretty much said everything swirling through her head. "I...yes. That. All of that. Exactly." She sniffled, wiping her eyes on the back of her head.

"Just...I always knew exactly what I wanted out of my life and I always got it...and now...just...it's gone. It's all gone. And I could have been there...and the guy I was mad at for not doing his work...and he's dead too and everything I was mad about seems so....stupid..."

Junkrat quirked his head to the side and chuckled, "y'know...I been outta th'Outback fer a while an' I ain't never been t'Starbucks...That good, eh?" She sure made it sound good, maybe he'd get into town and go to one sometime, if only to say that he'd done so.

He looked surprised when her eyes sudennly teared up and he was by her side, putting a hand on her shoulder, "it's a bit much when someone manages t'say exactly wot yew want t'say, eh?" He gave a soft chuckle and used a thumb to brush away her tears, "yew ain't ever gotta be alone, yew at least got one person who gets it, Ansell gets it too." He nodded, "me'n him are good friends y'know? He helped me when I was just a scared kid tryin' t'figure out the hell I'd been tossed into." He shrugged and looked to the side, "I kin try an' be that fer yew?" It was the best he could offer, really.

He nodded and looked thoughtful, nudgin her chin so she was looking up at him, "it ain't gone, as long as yer still alive yer ambitions ain't gone. Yew jus' gotta find yer center again." He sighed, "which ain't easy, findin' yer feet when th'world seems intent on pulling thrug out from under yew is hard, but yer also tough, ye'll be okay." He grinned, "an' I'm always here when yer not okay!" He tapped his chin, "yew said yer in film? Tried Chicago? It's a pretty big place...Might find some bites there? First step to gettin' past messed up shit is takin' th'first step forwards. An' never look back."

He had a thought after a moment and frowned, "M'sorry they haven't found or heard from Georgie boy yet...He'll come back though...I know he will!"

Kathryn just stared at him for a long moment. "You've...never had Starbucks? Really? Wow. We are gonna have to fix that. Like...soon."

She seemed a little surprised when he came close and touched her face, but she didn't pull away, just watching him a touch warily. "I dunno...I think...it'd be nice to have a friend who gets it...I mean, Tom doesn't. Dad doesn't. They understand...but...not get it, you know?" She tried to explain.

She sighed at mention of her father. "So like...threatening to go find dad was just a way to piss off mom when I was little. Then it started being a thing I really wanted to do...and it took me years. Years...to find him. Then...poof. He's gone again." She sniffled again, catching the tip of her nose on her sweater sleeve. "It's just like...all the stupid in my life is catching up to me all at once..."

Junkrat couldn't help a laugh at how horrified she seemed at the idea, shaking his head, "Never! But I'd love t'go if yew ever wanna enlighten me!" George would kill him for this, but Kathryn needed a friend and he wasn't going to leave her hanging.

He pulled back when he noticed the wary look in her eyes, laughing a little, "sorry...But listen...I'll be yer friend if yew want." He reached to run a hand through his hair, looking towards the floor, "I don't really got many people who get it either...I kin talk at them but...No one understands." He nudged her gently and grinned, "so we kin' just gripe at each other, eh mate?" It was better than stewing all alone on it he supposed.

He sipped at his tea thoughtfully as she spoke, nodding understandingly and giving her a sympathetic smile, "I know wot that feels like..." He sighed, "I have such vague memories of me dad before the blast...An' after it I spent so long lookin' fer 'im..." He looked down into his cup, "an' now I got him...But...Do I? He's a much darker person..." He gave a sigh and furrowed his brows with an exasperated smile, "funny how much we got in common, eh? Given how diff'rent we are..." He tapped his chin and smiled, "yew know when I wanna blow off steam I like to make things explode...Lotta' abandoned barnes 'round here." He said this with a hinting tone in his voice, hoping she would pick up what he was suggesting they do.
