The late afternoon sun played through the streets of Cairo. It cast deep shadows between the buildings and through archways, broken in a few places as the evening lights started turning on in the shops and cafes that would stay open late into the night.
The cloaked woman drew little attention as she passed amid those that came and went on the busy street. While few spared her a second or even a first glance there was little that she missed. One clear amber eye kept steady watch around her, flickering to doorways, up towards windows, to those that lingered in front of shops, old habits keeping her ever alert for threats.
It had been too many years since she had been in this city, too many years since she had been home. So much felt familiar, yet much had changed. There used to be a different shop on that corner there. That other place was more old and tired than she remembered it being when she’d frequented it before. That building there though, nothing had changed about it at all. She was certain that same poster had even still been on the wall years before.
She remembered that café too, the night the whole team had been in town after a mission. They had taken up the corner table and drank and laughed and told wild war stories well into the night, until the staff had finally kicked them out to close for the night. For just a moment she could almost hear them all again, and for just that moment it was as though nothing had changed. She smiled a little sadly to herself at the memory. She’d missed this city. She’d missed her team. Her family.
She hesitated, then crossed to the place and pushed aside her hood as she stepped inside. As early as it was several of the tables were already filling up. The same corner table was in the same place, with a young family already seated there.
“Just for one?” The host asked with a polite smile as Ana looked over to her.
She nodded after a moment. “I’m not expecting anyone else.”
She sat at the small table near the front. She had a lot to think about as of late. But they were things she could think on over dinner and tea.
